DYNAMITE HEADS TO KICKSTARTER FOR ALL-NEW DEJA THORIS FULL SIZE STATUE

Lee Strong Lee Strong’s heart was captured by the dinosaurs found At the Earth’s Core in 1962—he has been a Burroughs reader ever since. Lee also worked for the US Department of Defense (DOD); changed international policy with a single report; deployed to Kuwait; saved taxpayers $5 million; and reformed the $2 billion DOD Personal Property Program. A Soldier of Poloda is Lee’s first novel. He is currently working on two Pellucidar novels with more to come. Lee’s motto: More Adventure ! More Excitement !! More Burroughs !!!

COVER and INTERIOR ART: Douglas Klauba An award-winning illustrator, Douglas Klauba was born and raised in Chicago, and is a graduate of the American Academy of Art. Doug’s paintings have been included in the art annuals of Spectrum: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art, the Society of Illustrators, and Imagine FX magazine. His painting, “Mercury Jack,” exhibited in the Spectrum Show at the Museum of American Illustration and another of his paintings,”Da Vinci’s Dream” was awarded Best in Show at the 2005 World Fantasy Convention. A poster of his painting, “Stella 7” can be seen hanging on Howard Wolowitz’s bedroom wall on the hit television show, The Big Bang Theory. He was Artist Guest at the 2016 Oum Oum, and previously provided interior art for Tarzan Trilogy..

Our Carson of Venus web comic strip was just the second strip introduced in our newly expanded program back in 2013. Written by Martin Powell and drawn by the masterful artist, Tom Floyd, with Diana Leto doing the colors, it became one of the most popular of our many strips. Health issues required Tom to step down two years ago, but we want to recognize his early contributions to our fledgling web comic program. Thank you, Tom!
And now, we are pleased to introduce our new team on this relaunch. Still written by Martin Powell and colored by Diana Leto, we’d like you to meet Paul Abrams, our new artist, and Kurt Hathaway, our new letterer. See their bios below.

Kurt Hathaway has over 900 credits as a comics letterer. In addition to Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc, clients have included Marvel, DC Comics, Dark Horse, Image Comics, Avatar Press and many others. Kurt’s work has appeared in dozens of graphic novels and comics including Legends of the Dark Knight, Youngblood, The Flash, Alan Moore’s Providence, Green Lantern, Badrock and hundreds of others. In May-June 1915, Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote a film scenario titled “Ben, King of the Beasts.” When he could not secure a movie deal, the story was serialized in The New York Evening Worldnewspapers that November as “The Man-Eater.” The 37,000-word adventure novella was combined with Burroughs’ succeeding post-apocalyptic novella and released in hardback by Science-Fiction & Fantasy Publications in 1957 as Beyond Thirty and The Man-Eater.
THE PLOT
In the Belgian Congo, big game hunters Jefferson Scott, Jr. and Robert Gordon befriend the Methodist missionary Reverend Sangamon Morton and his wife Mary and daughter, Ruth, whom Scott soon marries. Gordon is entrusted with returning stock certificates—the inheritance of the Scotts’ young daughter Virginia—to America for safekeeping with Scott’s father.
When Scott and the elder Mortons are killed by hostile natives, Belgian forces rescue Ruth and Virginia, who relocate to America to live with Jefferson Scott, Sr. There, they find that their inheritance has disappeared. When Scott, Sr. dies and his nephew Scott Taylor arrives to claim the estate, the race is on to establish Virginia’s birthright—a quest that will lead Virginia and Gordon’s son, Dick, to darkest Africa in pursuit of the truth, pursued by Taylor. There, the rival factions encounter a huge lion whose fate becomes entwined with theirs—in a chase that returns them all to the family estate in Virginia.

WRITER Martin Powell
Martin Powell has written hundreds of stories in numerous genres for Disney, Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, and Capstone Books, among others. Nominated for the prestigious Eisner Award for his work with Sherlock Holmes, Powell is the author of many of the most popular characters in the industry, including Superman, Batman, Popeye the Sailor, Dracula, Frankenstein, and Tarzan of the Apes.
Currently, as the author of almost a dozen different ERB online comic strips, and the critically acclaimed Jungle Tales of Tarzan graphic novel from Dark Horse, it is probable that Powell has written more Burroughs characters than any other contemporary writer. Powell received the coveted Golden Lion Award from the Burroughs Bibliophiles in 2017 for his on-going contributions to the legacy of Edgar Rice Burroughs.

ARTIST Ronn Sutton
Ronn Sutton has been drawing comics for several decades and has illustrated hundreds of comic book stories, working for a variety of publishers including a nine-year stint of drawing Elvira, Mistress of the Dark for Claypool Comics. Many of these comics were written by his long-time love, Janet L. Hetherington.
Sutton’s first published comics go back to the early 1970s. He has drawn horror, romance, mystery, adventure, science fiction, and humor comics (including Fear Agent, Honey West, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Sherlock Holmes, The Phantom, Bram Stoker, Edgar Allan Poe, Vampira, and others). For seven years, he created freelance courtroom sketches for newspapers and TV. Ronn has done extensive magazine illustration and worked periodically in animation and television.
In 2015, Motorbooks published the 96-page graphic novel Lucifer’s Sword MC: Life and Death in an Outlaw Motorcycle Club written by Hells Angel Phil Cross and illustrated by Ronn. LETTERS Becka Kinzie
Becka Kinzie is a freelance artist and colorist from Ontario, Canada. Some of her coloring work has been featured in comics such as Hacktivist (vol. 2), and the Gothic Tales of Haunted Love anthology. When not coloring, Becka iss drawing her own horror/darkly inclined comics and art. She’s currently working on her horror/sci-fi webcomic, which can be found on her website at thebecka.com.
Tarzan of the Apes Swings into South Africa

Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. (ERB Inc) is pleased to announce that the complete Tarzan of the Apes book series is now available in South Africa. Publisher Henoch Neethling is releasing the 24 books by author Edgar Rice Burroughs in new Afrikaans language editions.
This will be the third, and most comprehensive, South African publication of the immortal jungle lord’s adventures. The first 20 Tarzan novels were released between 1946-51 by African Press Bookshop. From 1983 to 1985, 12 novels were re-released in paperback by Olympos. Now, all 24 novels will be available in a matched set, featuring cover art by renowned fantasy artist Joe Jusko, in hardbound and softbound editions.
“It’s because of these stories that I learned to read,” says publisher Neethling. “A recent study in South Africa revealed that an alarming percentage of Grade 4 pupils read without real comprehension. Simply put, children cannot grasp story content because they do not read enough. We hope this book launch will inspire both children and adults to read and be active again. So many of us read the novels as children, and then ran around outside, swinging from vines and pretending to be Tarzan. Tarzan speaks all African languages and it’s time for Edgar Rice Burroughs to speak Afrikaans again!”

“Pirate Blood” was among the manuscripts discovered in Edgar Rice Burroughs’ safe following his death in 1950. It was Burroughs’ second foray (after The Mucker) into a narrative featuring an anti-hero as the protagonist, a dark tale of piracy, murder, and genetic pre-destination. Penned in 1932, the tale was too gritty for Burroughs’ usual audience, and remained unsold until 1970.
Our story:
Johnny LaFitte always comes in second to his best friend Frank Adams, in academics as well as athletics. Johnny blames heredity—Frank and his friends are scions of California’s old money, while Johnny’s most notable ancestor was the famous pirate Jean LaFitte. Johnny’s belief in genetic destiny grows when he graduates from college to become a motorcycle cop, while his friends live the entitled, country club lifestyle provided by their family fortunes. It’s a particularly bitter pill when Johnny discovers that Daisy Juke, his childhood sweetheart, is now engaged to Frank.
A chase to catch a bank robber finds Johnny shanghaied to the South Pacific aboard a dirigible. There, Johnny is forced to join a band of pirates to survive—and discovers his unique aptitude for the profession. Johnny’s attraction to La Diablesa, the mistress of his boss, the Vulture, complicates things—as does the appearance of his lost love, Daisy.

WRITER Martin Gately
Martin Gately commenced his writing career in the late 1980s working for DC Thomson on Starblazer–his first ever published story was illustrated by Enrique Alcatena. After a short stint as an editorial assistant, he left publishing behind to work in the British criminal justice system, at both the Serious Fraud Office and the Attorney General’s Office.
Returning to writing in the last few years, Gately was reunited with Alcatena on the Phantom: Generations story Sherwood Jungle from Moonstone Books and also The Cryptid Kid comic strip for Fortean Times, to which he is a regular contributor of articles.
Gately writes the continuing adventures of Gaston Leroux’s detective character Rouletabille for the Tales of the Shadowmen series from Black Coat Press, as well as contributing to numerous other anthologies from this publisher.
Also, Gately the author of the official short story prequel to Philip José Farmer’s first novel (in The Worlds of Philip José Farmer Volume 4 from Meteor House). His most recent published work appears in the Mammoth Book of Jack the Ripper Stories (Mammoth Books). He is currently working on his first novel.
ART/COLOR/LETTERS Anthony Summey
Anthony Summey is originally from the small southern town of Walhalla, South Carolina, where he drove his grade school teachers crazy with doodles of superheroes all over his homework assignments. Needless to say, he has always and will always love to draw.
Summey is currently a freelance comic book artist and Professor of Art and Animation. He has received his MFA degree from the Savannah College of Art and Design with a concentration in Sequential Art. For those unfamiliar with that term, it simply means he studied comic strips, comic books, storyboarding, and children’s books. His work has appeared internationally with an ever-growing client list.
