The Moon Men – A Trilogy of Future History

Written at the close of World War I, Burroughs’ alternate history tells of a great 50-year war that finally concludes in 1967 with an Afllied victory culminating in world peace and total freedom. As the new dawn begins, Earth is learning how to put war behind her while simultaneously launching a technologically advanced space craft with a five man crew on its maiden voyage to Mars.

The voyage’s primary mission is to forge diplomatic relations between the civilizations of Mars (known as Barsoom by its inhabitants) and Earth. The ship’s most senior officer, Captain Julian, is forced to deal with space sickness and panic from his old flight school rival, Lt Commander Orthis, who is damaging the ship in his fear — leading to Orthis being put in irons. Orthis, consumed with rage, sabotages the ship’s engines resulting in a forced landing on the Moon.

During the descent, the spaceship is caught in a lunar spiral that pulls the ship deep into the center of the Moon revealing an earth-like environment with plants, animals and inhabitants. Julian gives Orthis a chance of redemption — not only for Orthis’ sake but for the survival of his crew, as every man is needed.

Julian and the crew explore and discover a variety of creatures and civilizations. While navigating the majestic forest-like inner moon, they meet the beautiful princess Nah-ee-lah, who captures the eye of both Julian and Orthis. Will Julian’s moral instincts prevail when faced with Orthis’ selfish desires?

The Earthmen soon encounter the warlike civilization of the Kalkars — human-like creatures whose thirst for power will capture the diabolical passions of Orthis. Together, Orthis and the Kalkars turn their desires toward Earth, launching an invasion and 400-year occupation, pitting future generations of Julian’s and Orthis’ descendants in the ultimate struggle of human freedom versus totalitarian rule — an underlying theme in many of Burroughs’ adventures.

WRITER Martin Powell

Martin Powell has written hundreds of stories in numerous genres for Disney, Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, and Capstone Books, among others. Nominated for the prestigious Eisner Award for his work with Sherlock Holmes, Powell is the author of many of the most popular characters in the industry, including Superman, Batman, Popeye the Sailor, Dracula, Frankenstein, and Tarzan of the Apes.

Currently, as the author of almost a dozen different ERB online comic strips, and the critically acclaimed Jungle Tales of Tarzan graphic novel from Dark Horse, it is probable that Powell has written more Burroughs characters than any other contemporary writer. Powell received the coveted Golden Lion Award from the Burroughs Bibliophiles in 2017 for his on-going contributions to the legacy of Edgar Rice Burroughs.

ARTIST Ricardo Jurado

Ricardo Jurado is an artist based in Sabadell, a city near to Barcelona, with over seventeen years of experience dedicated to animation, illustration and comics — although during the past eight years he’s been mostly focused on gaming and videogames. Ricardo has participated in a couple of anthologies such as Once Upon a Time Machine published by Darkhorse Comics and Visions of the End (Visiones del Fin in its original) published by Aleta Ediciones in Spain.

This Elephant Was Frantically Trying To Wake Baby

The cow elephant’s active baby boy had been running around the zoo compound like normal all day – but not anymore. Her calf had been lying on the ground for a nap, but now he wouldn’t wake up. Her baby wasn’t responding to her trunk’s touch and her concern was growing. Suddenly though, a familiar face appeared to offer assistance.

Killer elephant shot dead in India

A rogue elephant, who trampled 15 people to death in eastern India, has been shot dead in an elaborate hunt involving forest guards and sharpshooters.

The wild elephant, believed to be about 25-years-old, had killed four people in Bihar in March before it crossed over to neighbouring Jharkhand state where it crushed 11 people to death.


Forest authorities recently signed shooting orders for the tusker, which had so terrorised the locals that they fled their villages in the hilly forests of Jharkhand.

COVER ART: Chris Peuler is a genre illustrator based in Chicago, working primarily in fantasy and science fiction. Kickstarter Funding Campaign Opportunity – only a few days left

The Kickstarter Campaign for the forthcoming Edgar Rice Burroughs’ 100 Year Art Chronology by Michael Tierney concludes on Wednesday, June 28, 2017. Participants who contribute $125 or more will receive a variety of stretch rewards, such as trading cards or limited-edition hardback reprints of Burroughs’ novels.

Offering more than 5,000 images and 140,000 words in four volumes, the deluxe Art Chronology will be published by Chenault & Gray with the full cooperation and authorization of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc.

As the project has surpassed its initial funding target, additional rewards, such as reproductions of imaginative maps drawn by Burroughs, will be produced. Company Expands Staff, Launches Publishing Division


Tarzana, CA (June 7, 2017) — Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. (ERB, Inc.), the company that manages and licenses the creative works of novelist Edgar Rice Burroughs, including TARZAN OF THE APES and JOHN CARTER OF MARS, is pleased to announce changes to its executive structure in the areas of operations, publishing, and special projects effective June 1, 2017.

Cathy Mann Wilbanks has been promoted to Vice President of Operations. In recent years, Ms. Wilbanks served as Archivist, where she oversaw the company’s vast library of historical publications, artwork and other artifacts owned by the company. She will now be responsible for all internal operations and continue to assist in marketing. Ms. Wilbanks, who joined ERB, Inc. in 1984, holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education and Masters of Education from California State University Northridge.

Tyler Wilbanks, Director of Operations-Publishing, will now be responsible for all aspects of the company’s new publishing division. Mr. Wilbanks has served as the corporate internet technician since 2008, and is a recent graduate of California State University Northridge with a bachelor’s degree in Business Management.

Scott Tracy Griffin joins the company in the newly created position of Director of Special Projects. Mr. Griffin, a writer and film historian whose collaboration with the company dates to 1996, will work with the company’s recently launched publishing division, special events, conventions and new print and digital creative endeavors. He is the author of Tarzan on Film (Titan Books, 2016) and Tarzan: The Centennial Celebration (Titan Books, 2012), and has 25 years of journalistic experience and documentary appearances. A graduate of Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, Griffin is pursuing his MBA at California State University Los Angeles.

“This is an exciting time for ERB, Inc.” says Company President Jim Sullos. “More than 100 years after Mr. Burroughs wrote his first book, interest in his stories and characters remains powerful. Ralph N. Laughlin grew up in the Midwest. Upon graduation from the University of Iowa’s School of Journalism he joined the General Electric Advertising & Public Relations department. During his career he went on to work for a number of Fortune 500 companies. Upon retirement, he turned his writing talents to pleasure. He has published five books on various subjects, ranging from motivational, to thought provoking, to humorous relief.

He’s been a life-long fan (some say fanatic) of the Tarzan books, leading him to conceive and develop the idea of placing Tarzan and his family in modern times with actual historical events. Tarzan: The Greystoke Legacy Under Siege is the first in a series of such stories along this precept. He currently lives in southwest Virginia.

Ann E. Johnson lives in Maine and writes historical fiction and fantasy. She has received awards for her fiction at the Ocean Park Writers Conference. Ann is retired and spends her days writing, researching, or training in the martial arts of swords, staff, tai chi, karate and jiu jitsu. She began martial arts to enhance her writing and stayed because she found she loved it.

COVER ART: Tom Gianni is an award winning artist who studied at the American Academy of Arts where he has taught since 1983. For decades he has worked as a courtroom sketch artist and has painted a huge mural at the Eisenhower Public Library.

Michael Tierney’s Edgar Rice Burroughs’ 100 Year Art Chronology is a 4-volume collection that captures the vast illustrative history of Edgar Rice Burroughs. ERB., Inc. and Chenault & Gray Publishing are working together to bring this project to life.

With over 1,200 pages of content, more than 5,000 images and 140,000 words the 4-volume series explores the art used in the manifold publications and creations of the vast Burroughs body of work for the past century and more, from Tarzan to Barsoom, from Venus to Caspak, from wild west to the Lost Continent and more!

We are producing the FOUR volume Edgar Rice Burroughs’ 100 Year Art Chronology, an illustrative history of all Burroughs’ publications in the United States (with a heavy dose of art from the United Kingdom). Written and compiled by Michael Tierney, the narrative gives the history of Burroughs’ work and the often legendary artists who visualized it, featuring untold stories, art that hasn’t been seen since its release, and pieces that were buried in the vaults from the beginning of his publishing history to the present day.
