Historic Sci-fi Legend to make Gaming Debut in John Carter®: Warlord of Mars®
Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Classic Character Brought to Life in a Kickstarter campaign starting April 19
Tarzana, California (March 29, 2021) – Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., today announced that its team is working with FNCPR to develop and publish the video game entitled John Carter: Warlord of Mars.
Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., manages and licenses the creative works of novelist Edgar Rice Burroughs—including Tarzan of the Apes® and John Carter of Mars®. FNCPR Ltd. has acquired the license to develop and publish the John Carter: Warlord of Mars game.
Through this cooperation, the grandfather of science fiction meets state-of-the-art gaming technology in an all-action, first-person adventure video game, bringing the world’s oldest interplanetary warrior to life across PC and Console platforms.
John Carter is the planet-hopping hero that was conceived over 100 years ago by genre-defining writer, Burroughs. As well as being the central character in 11 novels since 1912, he has featured in various comic book incarnations, tabletop games and a feature film, spanning several decades. Carter’s adventures have left a lasting cultural legacy, inspiring writers and scientists like Ray Bradbury, Jerry Siegal, and Carl Sagan. He also profoundly influenced series like Flash Gordon and blockbusters like George Lucas’ Star Wars and James Cameron’s Avatar. Gamers now have the opportunity to immerse themselves in Burroughs’ epic fantasy world.
The creative work on the game is well underway, and Tanglewood Games has been appointed by FNCPR as the lead developer for the project.
The voice cast includes two BAFTA winners. David Elliott takes the lead role of Carter, Brian Bovell as Tars Tarkas, and Kezia Burrows playing the Princess of Mars, Dejah Thoris.
Starting in 1945 at the end of WWII, the gameplay will centre on the soldier John Carter, working on a mission to find Hitler’s secret projects general, Hans Kammler. Kammler is experimenting with a new technology that ultimately transports John Carter to Mars, known to its inhabitants as “Barsoom.”
This echoes the dimension-shifting narrative of the original novels and comics, in which the American Civil War veteran dramatically found himself transcending worlds and fighting for the inhabitants of Mars.
James Sullos, President of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. said:
“One might wonder what Mr. Burroughs, over a century after he first inked the names John Carter, Dejah Thoris, and Tars Tarkas to the page, would have thought to see his characters spring to life in a video game—what in his day would have itself been considered the stuff of science fiction.
“I’d like to think he would be pleased not only to see fans of John Carter play the game and step into his wondrous world of Barsoom, but also to at last set foot on the dying planet himself, with sword in hand, and have the visceral experience of being able to play one of his own heroes in the game. Doubtless he would have been thrilled to see his immortal swordsman and the rich setting of Barsoom come alive in the John Carter: Warlord of Mars video game, exposing his creations to a whole new generation of fans.”
Frazer Nash, from FNCPR, who are publishing the game, said:
“In many ways, John Carter is the original fantasy action hero, thrilling readers and fans well before the likes of Flash Gordon, Superman and Luke Skywalker. Most superheroes have already made their transition into the gaming world; it is high time that John Carter makes his debut.
“The action follows Carter as he meets the weird and wonderful natives of Barsoom, acclimatising himself to Martian gravity, the local customs and Martian languages. His mission includes meeting the mighty Thark warrior, Tars Tarkas, fighting with giant ape-like monsters, and falling in love with the beautiful Princess of Mars, Dejah Thoris. It’s over a century since these characters were created, and we’re excited to find a new way of bringing them to life.”
With initial work on the game well underway, the next step in the process will be launching a Kickstarter crowdfunding initiative to fund the next stage of development. This will be launched on April 19, 2021. To find out more, sign up today http://jcwom.com/
With a deep and epic back catalog of material to draw on, the longer-term character and game development options are boundless.

Preorder Now—The Girl from Hollywood™ Centennial Edition!
In 1921, Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote a novel unlike any other in his entire catalog—a sordid tale of drug addiction, corruption, and murder set against the backdrop of Prohibition-era Hollywood. He believed it to be one of his finest works, written as it was from his own experience after he and his family moved to their Tarzana Ranch in Southern California and became exposed to both the allure and perils of nearby Tinseltown. Now, celebrate the hundredth anniversary of this timeless work in The Girl from Hollywood Centennial Edition, featuring a new foreword by Michael D. Sellers (author of John Carter and the Gods of Hollywood), a specially commissioned frontispiece by renowned artist Douglas Klauba, classic cover art by P. J. Monahan, and rare and never-before-seen bonus materials from the archives of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., in Tarzana, California.
Many Edgar Rice Burroughs fans don’t realize that the widely available Ace Books paperback edition of The Girl from Hollywood published in the 1970s was significantly abridged, with lengthy passages excised throughout. The Girl from Hollywood Centennial Edition restores this missing text.
The Girl from Hollywood Centennial Edition will be available in a paperback and a hardcover Collector’s Edition. The book is expected to ship Spring 2021.

When the Penningtons, a wholesome ranching family from the nearby foothills, come into her orbit, will they too become forever trapped in the tangled web of Hollywood corruption, drug peddling, addiction—and murder?

About Edgar Rice Burroughs
The creator of the immortal characters Tarzan of the Apes and John Carter of Mars, Edgar Rice Burroughs is one of the world’s most popular authors. His timeless tales of heroes and heroines transport readers from the jungles of Africa and the dead sea bottoms of Barsoom to the miles-high forests of Amtor and the savage inner world of Pellucidar, and even to alien civilizations Beyond the Farthest Star. Mr. Burroughs’ books are estimated to have sold hundreds of millions of copies, and they have spawned 60 films and 250 television episodes.
About Michael D. Sellers
Michael D. Sellers is a filmmaker based in Los Angeles with more than twenty feature films to his credit as producer, writer, and/or director, including the award-winning Vlad and Eye of the Dolphin. Prior to his film career, he served for eleven years as an undercover CIA officer, serving in Moscow, Warsaw, Ethiopia, and the Philippines. He was awarded the CIA Intelligence Commendation Medal for his actions during a violent coup attempt experienced during one of his assignments. He credits Edgar Rice Burroughs for imparting to him a spirit of adventure, and tolerance for misadventure, that has been a constant theme of his life. In 2012, he wrote John Carter and the Gods of Hollywood, which chronicled the history of ERB’s A Princess of Mars from conception through the completion and release of Disney’s John Carter film directed by Andrew Stanton. Most items on his bucket list have a check mark beside them, but one that remains is to make a documentary film that he would entitle The Life and Mind of Edgar Rice Burroughs.
About Douglas Klauba
An award-winning illustrator, Douglas Klauba was born and raised in Chicago, and is a graduate of the American Academy of Art. His paintings have been included in the art annuals of Spectrum: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art, the Society of Illustrators, and Imagine FX magazine. About P. J. Monahan
P. J. Monahan was one of the most prolific pulp magazine illustrators of the early twentieth century. In addition to providing the dust jacket art for the first hardcover edition of The Girl from Hollywood, Monahan illustrated many other works written by Edgar Rice Burroughs, including the first edition of Thuvia, Maid of Mars and thirteen covers for stories appearing in The All-Story, All-Story Weekly, Argosy All-Story Weekly, and All-Story Cavalier Weekly.

NEWS FROM TARZANA: PUBLISHING UPDATE
Tarzana, California (November 19, 2020) – In 1931, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., launched its own publishing division with the release of the first hardcover edition of Tarzan the Invincible by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Today, nearly ninety years later, the company’s publishing efforts are still going strong, and are in fact more robust and ambitious than ever. As the Director of Publishing at ERB, Inc., I would like to give you an overview of where we’ve come with our book publishing over the past year, and give you a bit of a preview of where we’re headed.
I’m pleased to say that our publishing program has not only weathered the storm of the COVID epidemic, but is booming like never before. In some ways, this makes a lot of sense. In trying times, people turn to what makes them feel better and gives them hope—and what is more feel-good and inspiring than the heroes and heroines of the Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe, fighting against and overcoming the most daunting odds? And if you’re looking for a little escapism, no one does it better than ERB!
EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS AUTHORIZED LIBRARY
In December of last year, we released the first four volumes in the Edgar Rice Burroughs Authorized Library (Tarzan of the Apes, The Return of Tarzan, The Beasts of Tarzan, and The Son of Tarzan), followed by the next four volumes in August of this year (Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar, Jungle Tales of Tarzan, Tarzan the Untamed, and Tarzan the Terrible). Both sets of four books We are hard at work on the production of the next set of four Tarzan volumes (wait until you see those Jusko covers!), and you can expect an announcement very soon—so stay tuned and make sure to sign up for our email updates if you haven’t already!
One of the most frequent queries we get from customers about the ERB Authorized Library is “What is the publishing schedule for the Edgar Rice Burroughs Authorized Library?” We are releasing the books as swiftly as we can, which means approximately two to three sets of books will be published per year (there are currently four books in a set, although this may vary depending on the number of volumes in a given series). Right now we are in a good rhythm with our cover artist, the indefatigable Joe Jusko, so the release of two to three Authorized Library sets per year is a good estimate going forward. After the Tarzan series, we plan to move on to publishing all eleven volumes of the original Barsoom (Mars) series by Edgar Rice Burroughs, and then his other series in turn, followed by the standalone novels and collections.
EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS UNIVERSE
This past April, we launched the first volume of the Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe’s Swords of Eternity Super-Arc, Carson of Venus: The Edge of All Worlds by Matt Betts, followed by the release last month of Tarzan: Battle for Pellucidar by Win Scott Eckert. Both books have received fantastic and enthusiastic reviews from the fans, and they’ve been among our fastest-selling releases yet.
The Super-Arc will continue in John Carter of Mars: Gods of the Forgotten by Geary Gravel, which is slated for release in Spring 2021. I’ve already read an early draft, and let me tell you, John Carter fans, you are in for a real treat—an authentic romance of Barsoom that will transport you back to that treasured time of yore when you first cracked the spine on a Martian tale penned by the Master of Adventure himself. Victory Harben’s wayward adventures will continue in the bonus novelette included in the back pages of John Carter of Mars: Gods of the Forgotten, but you’ll have to wait until we announce preorders for the book to find out where in the ERB Universe she’s headed next!
Swords of Eternity will culminate in the fourth book in the cycle, Victory Harben: Fires of Halos, as told to yours truly by Ms. Harben herself. The book is releasing in…well, let’s just say 2021, since I’m just beginning to write it and I don’t want to give a misleading manuscript turnover date to the Director of Publishing. Oh wait…that’s me!
I should also add that we now have two classic ERB Universe novels back in print: Tarzan and the Valley of Gold by Fritz Leiber and Tarzan and the Dark Heart of Time by Philip José Farmer. If you haven’t picked these books up yet, you’re not going to want to miss them—especially since they are now considered ERB Universe canon and Win Scott Eckert’s Tarzan: Battle for Pellucidar makes reference to them.
So what’s next for the ERB Universe? Lots, I can assure you. Stay tuned to our email updates and follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to keep apprised of future releases.
THE WILD ADVENTURES OF EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS
As I am busy heading up both the Edgar Rice Burroughs Authorized Library and the Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe series, Jim Sullos, President of ERB, Inc., will continue on as the series editor of the Wild Adventures of Edgar Rice Burroughs. This past year saw the release of Will Murray’s astounding and highly entertaining novel Tarzan, Conqueror of Mars (available in hardcover and paperback), and we’ve been in talks with Will about the possibility of an epic sequel (fingers crossed!). We have a number of future Wild Adventures of Edgar Rice Burroughs releases written. by other authors lined up in the cue, and we are moving forward with the next title in the series (TBA) to be released in 2021.
EBOOKS
If you like to read your books on a device, make sure to check out our latest Kindle editions, including the first four volumes the ERB Authorized Library (Tarzan #5–8 are on the way), as well as Carson of Venus: The Edge of All Worlds by Matt Betts, and Tarzan: Battle for Pellucidar by Win Scott Eckert. And be sure not to miss Tarzan and the Dark Heart of Time by Hugo award winner Philip José Farmer and Tarzan, Conqueror of Mars by fan-favorite author Will Murray.
AUDIOBOOK EDITIONS FROM OASIS AUDIO
Only earlier this year, we announced that Oasis Audio would be releasing our entire catalog on audio, and they’ve already produced a whopping 12 releases, available in both CD and Audible editions! Top-notch professional narrators Ben Dooley and John McClain have provided outstanding performances as they bring the characters and worlds of Edgar Rice Burroughs to life. But don’t just take my word for it—check out the audiobook samples for yourself!
A NOTE ON SHIPPING
We strive to package and ship out your orders as quickly and safely as possible, but please note that we are a small press operating in the middle of a pandemic (COVID protocols call for limited staff and limited business hours). We prepare and ship customer orders in the order in which they are received. Since we receive hundreds of customer orders on the first day we announce a title, that may mean it takes a few business days for our shipping person to process even that first day of orders. Please know that we are working hard to get your books to you as quickly as possible, packing them safely and snuggly so they are not damaged in transit. We appreciate your patience!
WORLDS OF THANKS
Lastly, I would like to extend my personal gratitude to all the readers and fans of Edgar Rice Burroughs who have made this past year such a resounding success for our publishing program. I know that Jim, Cathy, and the whole team here at ERB, Inc., join me in these sentiments. But this is only the beginning—it’s an exciting time to be an ERB fan. There is much more adventure and excitement to come, and we look forward to bringing it to you!

Don’t forget—it’s World Elephant Day
Did you know that there are two types of elephant–Asian and African–and while they are indeed similar, they are too biologically different to breed? Or that the street value of a single elephant tusk is $15,000? Or that there are only about 40,000 Asian elephants left on this planet? August 12th is World Elephant Day, an international holiday dedicated to honoring these intelligent animals, learning more about their needs, and pledging to protect their welfare in the future.
