Limited Edition of “Back to the Stone Age” Reprint!

[Tarzana CA, April 24, 2014] This Limited Edition BACK TO THE STONE AGE novel was first printed in 1937 and is now being reprinted for the first time using the Original Printing Plates! These plates were discovered stored in their original wooden shipping crates and are thought to be the only surviving set of plates for any of Mr. Burroughs’ books.

Each book is signed and numbered [edition of 300] and features spectacular full-color illustrations – stunning works by some of the best ERB artists past and present. In addition to BACK TO THE STONE AGE you will receive an original printing plate from the book!

BACK TO THE STONE AGE has been printed the same way ERB books were printed 50 years ago – only better. A master printer has used the original plates to letterpress print on premium paper which has been sewn and cased into a vintage-style binding, and covered in a dust jacket produced by Phil Normand with art by John Coleman Burroughs.

The Girl from Hollywood – Another Classic Web Comic

Hollywood was a prime destination for beautiful young women in the 1920s. These women arrived from out in the country and other cities. They came full of hope of becoming major stars in the newfound motion picture profession. But most were at risk of falling under the influence of agents who had many ways to control their destiny. Women who grew up in the Hollywood area had more solid roots but even they would yield, at their peril, to the promises made to them but never kept.

Edgar Rice Burroughs gives an early look into the subculture of Hollywood, with drugs directing human activity, that continues to this day. The New York Times described The Girl from Hollywood as “a fascinating cultural document about a California ranch family ruined by booze, dope and movieland promiscuity.” During Prohibition, alcohol use was common, but distributors had to keep it hidden, hoping to not be discovered by the authorities. But hiding was next to impossible – so framing someone else for murder was one way to throw the authorities off your trail.

The upcming new Tarzan movie, developed by Warner Bros has finally announced the release date, aiming for July 1 of next year! With a $90 budget and several big names attached, including Margot Robbie as Jane Porter or Samuel L. Jackson as George Washington Williams, it is a hefty production! Before Tarzan… there was Norman of Torn. His origin cloaked in mystery, he is misguided by an evil force… all the while building the most powerful army in England.

(January 17, 2015 – Tarzana, CA) Norman’s story begins in 1243, during the power struggle between King Henry III and the KIng’s brother-in-law, Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester. At 17, Norman of Torn was the Greatest Swordsman in England, at 18 he had a large bounty on his head, and at 19 he was the leader of the most powerful and ruthless army in the land. And, the outlaw Norman of Torn becomes the most feared warrior of all England.

Raised and taught by the French fencing master, Jules de Vac, Norman was trained to be a simple, brutal, English-hating, killing machine. The only influence over him, besides de Vac, is a Priest who taught Norman his letters and chivalry towards women. But, the Priest was found mysteriously murdered in his cottage.

In another guise, that of Roger de Conde, Norman becomes involved with de Montfort’s daughter, Bertrade – defending her against her and her father’s enemies. She notes in him a curious resemblance to the English King’s son and heir, Prince Edward.

As Norman begins to sense his true origins, de Vac turns against Norman – costing de Vac his life. The fencing master had kidnapped Norman as a child to serve as the vehicle of vengeance against the King. As de Vac dies, he reveals Norman’s true origins. With his identity known, can Norman still be sure of winning the hand of Bertrade, daughter of Simon de Montfort, the King’s mortal enemy?

When Edgar Rice Burroughs first established himself as a writer with Under the Moons of Mars / A Princess of Mars in early1912, he was asked by his publisher, Thomas Metcalf of All Story Magazine, to write another story and to center it in medieval times. He did so, submitting The Outlaw of Torn. After three rewrites, it was still rejected by Metcalf. But he was told to not give up and to write something else. His next novel was Tarzan of The Apes which established Burroughs’ writing career. The Outlaw of Torn was finally published as a five part serial in New Story Magazine in early 1914, but it wasn’t published in book form until 1927. This is one of only two historical novels Mr. Burroughs wrote, the other being I Am a Barbarian, set in Caligula’s Rome and first published in 1967 – seventeen years after Mr. Burroughs’ death.

Deep in the jungle, King falls, breaks his compass and becomes hopelessly lost. On the eighth morning, as a fever overtakes King, he has hallucinations. Or so he believes when he encounters sad-faced queens on ghostly elephants in the dark shadows of the jungle where the ruins of their ancient cities still stand. Then, someone rescues him. Or so he dreams.

Adventure in a lost city of a secret kingdom awaits King – an American student of medicine, who came to the jungle to study strange maladies and, once there, becomes an explorer who stumbles upon the many thousand year-old secret of THE LAND OF THE HIDDEN MEN.

Asia, this vast continent of ancient civilizations and mysterious peoples, has many corners little known to the rest of the world. To survive in this ancient land, Gordon King must combat the warriors of the lost city of Pnom Dhek and battle the loathsome Leper King of Lodidhapura for the love of the beautiful jungle princess, Fou-tan.

(September, 13 2014 – Tarzana, CA) The world of 2137 was half known and half unknown – at least as far as the Pan-American Union was concerned. Having stayed out of the Great War over 200 years before, the entire eastern hemisphere – east of the 30th Meridian West and west of the 175th Meridian East [essentially, all of Europe, Africa and Asia] – had become ravaged by war and descended into chaos and barbarism. The eastern hemisphere served as no example for nations in the western hemisphere to follow. So, it became illegal for anyone, or any nation, in the Western Hemisphere [both Americas] to go BEYOND THIRTY. For two centuries, the peace that followed in the western hemisphere, as nations voluntarily united, was unprecedented.

There was steady vigilance to ensure all was well. And then, disaster struck during a routine patrol aboard the aero-submarine, Coldwater, commanded by the Pan-American Navy Lieutenant Jefferson Turck. The submarine was patrolling from Iceland to the Azores, along the 30th meridian, when the storm-tossed vessel’s anti-gravitation screens and engines failed. And as its wireless radio had also failed, Turck could not summon help while his vessel drifted uncontrollably BEYOND THIRTY. With all these calamities happening at the same time, Tuck asked himself if there was a saboteur aboard. His suspicions were borne out when he and three crewmen boarded a small craft to catch some fresh fish for the crew. While the men were fishing, the Coldwater suddenly ascended and headed due west – back inside the 30th meridian to the safety of the Pan-American Union.

With knowledge of his grandfather’s old maps and his upbringing on how to navigate by the sun and stars, Turck concluded they were much closer to old England than New England. The unsettled crew reluctantly agreed to sail east. When they landed, they saw no civilization – only jungle. War-torn Europe was just a distant memory to these Pan-Americans, but to see no humans at all was unexpected.

Eventually contact is made – and not for the better. Turck discovers a queen of Grabritin, Victory, whose few subjects spend most of their time evading man-eating lions who have taken over the island nation. Then, Turck and Victory fall into the hands of the Abyssinian Empire, a black super-state ruling all of Africa, most of Europe, and the Arabian peninsula. While the Abyssinians’ technology is roughly equivalent to that of the nineteenth century, the white savages that populate Old Europe, in Turcks’ time, are no match for them. The Abyssinians consider whites a lower order and take them as slaves, including Turck and Victory. Turck succeeds in rescuing Victory amid exciting adventures and senseless, tragic deaths. And now Turck has only one alternative: to make his way with Victory to the rival empire of China, which now rules all of Asia. But will China consider him, an officer in the Navy of the Pan American Union, a friend or foe?

As the grandfather of science fiction, Edgar Rice Burroughs was an innovator and ahead of his time. See Burroughs’ flying boat [illustration and strip #1 below] which traveled sub-marine, on the marine surface, and in the air. Written in 1916, this Burroughs’ book, The Lost Continent is an adventure from the past about the future that might have been!

(August 15, 2014 – Tarzana, CA) University Professor Arthur Maxon has been experimenting with the creation of artificial life—and he is afraid of what he created. If life can be created from lifeless chemicals with no assurance that anything other than mindless monsters could be created, the safest place to pursue this gruesome research is far away from upstate New York. A remote island off the coast of Borneo is the perfect place to continue his experiments. So, Maxon departs for the East Indies – taking his beautiful daughter, Virginia, with him. Adventure awaits that neither could have ever imagined!

Maxon recruits Dr. Carl von Horn to be his fellow scientist and Captain of his yacht, the Ithaca. As the crew prepares for their voyage, a young man, Townsend J. Harper, Jr., becomes smitten by Virginia. Plus, unbeknownst to Maxon and Virginia, Dr. von Horn also hopes to marry Virginia.

On the island, Maxon and von Horn begin their experiments and grow several living creatures in chemical vats. They are humanoid but, mindless and ugly. Maxon hopes Experiment Number Thirteen will result in the perfect human being, and in his fanatic obsession, believes Virginia should wed his ultimate creation. But is this perfectly created human capable of feelings, or is he A Man Without a Soul?

New Comic Strip Launch – The War Chief

THE WAR CHIEF is a realistic historical novel about life and death on an Apache reservation during the final days of the Apache Wars. Decades before the movie Dances With Wolves, Edgar Rice Burroughs’ great respect for the West and his compassion for the exploitative treatment of the Native Americans at the hands of the pin-dah-lickoyee (white eyes) caused him to write a story that is an honest and sympathetic portrait of native life that does credit to both the Natives and Edgar Rice Burroughs.

The story revolves around Shoz-Dijiji a.k.a. Black Bear, son of Geronimo and once known as Andy MacDuff. Adopted by Geronimo as a baby, Shoz-Dijiji is Apache in everything but blood. His life gets complicated when he is influenced by his attraction to Wichita Billings, the daughter of a wealthy white rancher.

WRITER: MARTIN POWELL

Martin Powell, a professional writer since 1986, has written hundreds of stories in numerous genres for such Disney, Marvel, DC, and Sequential Pulp/Dark Horse Comics and others. Nominated for the prestigious Eisner Award for his work with Sherlock Holmes, he has written for some of the most popular characters in the industry, including Superman, Batman, Popeye the Sailor, Tarzan of the Apes. He is currently the author of the online weekly comic strips Carson of Venus and The Eternal Savage for Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. Martin has authored many children’s books, and is co-creator of the acclaimed Halloween Legion, with illustrator Diana Leto. Martin’s The Tall Tale of Paul Bunyan won the coveted Moonbeam Children’s Book Award for Best Graphic Novel of 2010.

ARTIST: NIK POLIWKO

Nik Poliwko is primarily a comic book artist and illustrator, who has also worked in computer animation and on television productions. His resume includes storyboarding for the original “Batman: The Animated Series” through Lightbox Studios in Toronto, as well as creating computer graphics for various TV series and movies, such as NBC’s “Shattered Promises.” Nik was also writer and artist of the official “Bob & Doug McKenzie” daily newspaper strip, based on the “Great White North” segment from the NBC series “SCTV”, and produced the book “Strange Brew”, a tie-in with the popular MGM cult movie “The Adventures of Bob and Doug McKenzie: Strange Brew.” In comics Nik has created material for a variety of publishers, including AC Comics, Monsterverse, Moonstone and Vortex among others, and has illustrated “Tarzan and the Native Boy” which appears in the “Jungle Tales of Tarzan” graphic novel from Sequential Pulp/Dark Horse Comics.
