Tuesday, June 11, 2024 (Tarzana, California) Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., the company founded by the creator of Tarzan of the Apes® and John Carter of Mars®, is pleased to announce preorders for the first three volumes of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ original Barsoom® Saga in handsome ERB Authorized Library editions, sporting brand-new epic cover art and interior frontispieces by legendary artist Joe Jusko. Although Mr. Burroughs is best known for creating his world-famous ape-man, he launched his renowned writing career with the serialization of “Under the Moons of Mars” in the pages of The All-Story magazine from February–July 1912, and many fans of his books consider the Barsoom series to be among his finest and most enduring works. “Under the Moons of Mars” was first published in hardcover in 1917 by A. C. McClurg & Co. under the title A Princess of Mars, and was followed by The Gods of Mars and The Warlord of Mars, both of which first appeared in The All-Story in 1913–14. The three novels make up one of the most highly influential and celebrated trilogies in the history of science fiction, and have left a permanent stamp on popular culture, influencing and inspiring the most prominent figures around the world, including Ray Bradbury, Carl Sagan, Jerry Seigel, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, and James Cameron, to name just a few. In the words of Ray Bradbury, “Burroughs is probably the most influential writer in the entire history of the world.” Without Edgar Rice Burroughs’ John Carter of Mars, it is doubtful that Superman, Star Wars, or Avatar would exist for audiences to enjoy, at least not in their recognizable forms.

These stunning hardcover editions feature gorgeous new cover art and frontispieces by Joe Jusko; forewords by venerated fantasy author and SFWA Grand Master Michael Moorcock (Elric, Hawkmoon, The Eternal Champion), bestselling science fiction and fantasy author Kevin J. Anderson (Dune, Star Wars, The X-Files), and NASA astronaut Terrence W. Wilcutt (veteran of four Space Shuttle missions); afterwords by noted ERB scholar Henry G. Franke III; and a bounty of rare and previously unpublished archival materials.

The first three volumes of the Barsoom Saga are expected to ship Fall 2024.

THE WILD ADVENTURES OF EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS™ SERIES

#1 Tarzan: Return to Pal-ul-don by Will Murray

With the African continent engulfed by World War II, John Clayton, Lord Greystoke, abandons his role as Lord of the Jungle in order to combat the spreading Nazi menace. Flying a P40 Tomahawk warplane, Clayton is sent on his first mission: to rescue the missing British Military Intelligence officer code-named Ilex. But the daring task plunges him into his savage past after he’s forced down in a lost land that seems hauntingly familiar. When Tarzan of the Apes returns to the prehistoric realm called Pal-ul-don, he must revert to his most savage persona, that of Tarzan-jad-guru—Tarzan the Terrible!

#2 Tarzan on the Precipice By Michael A. Sanford
At the conclusion of the classic TARZAN OF THE APES by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Tarzan is despondent but assured he did what was honorable by enabling Jane to leave with his cousin, William Clayton (who believes he is the rightful heir to the Greystoke estate and can appropriately provide for Jane when they marry). But what then? There has never been an explanation of Tarzan’s activities after his presence in Wisconsin and his voyage back to Africa – until now.

#3 Tarzan Trilogy By Thomas Zachek
Three ALL NEW tales, in one book, featuring Tarzan at Point Station, a remote English outpost near the Waziri homelands. Set during the advent of World War II, we see more and more European intrusion into the Bolongo River Basin. Tarzan becomes embroiled in increasingly dangerous events as cultures clash. With new interior illustrations.

#4 Tarzan: The Greystoke Legacy Under Siege By Ralph N. Laughlin & Ann E. Johnson
Set in the 1980s, The Greystoke Legacy Under Siege lifts the TARZAN series to new, ground-breaking heights with a high adventure that immerses TARZAN and his offspring in an epic battle for their family’s survival. The book also includes a solution to the real-life murder of Dian Fossey, who devoted her life to the study and preservation of African gorillas. With new interior illustrations.

#5 A Soldier of Poloda [Further Adventures Beyond the Farthest Star] By Lee Strong
Worlds at War! American intelligence officer Thomas Randolph is teleported from the World War II battlefields of Normandy into the belly of the evil Kapar empire on the planet Poloda. The Kapar’s only passion is to conquer and destroy the outnumbered Unis forces who had been engaged in a century-long struggle to survive. Rechristened Tomas Ran, the Earthman now understands that the same fierce determination to defeat Hitler must now be used as a weapon to defeat the fascist Kapars – a merciless foe bent on global domination.

#6 Swords Against the Moon Men By Christopher Paul Carey
In this sequel to Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Moon Maid trilogy, Earth has been conquered and humanity brutally enslaved under the cruel tyranny of the Kalkar invaders whose evil was spawned from Va-nah, the Moon’s hollow interior. A desperate plea from Barsoom swiftly hurls Julian 7th upon a lonely quest into the heart of Va-nah where he teams up with a U-ga princess and a fierce alien quadruped, and launches a daring rescue to save a lost Barsoomian ambassadorial mission.

#7 Untamed Pellucidar By Lee Strong
The Soviet government’s Red Army, led by Comrade Trotsky, pursues the retreating White Russian forces into the dangerous world of Pellucidar. Young conscript Kirov, formerly a student anthropologist, finds his escape from the war short lived as he meets the incredible and dangerous Paleolithic animal life of the Northern environs of Pellucidar’s Stone Age world. To survive, Kirov must escape slavery from the beautiful Ala and her mighty Black Birdriders, foster a civil war, impress the natives with his “inventions,” conquer the terrifying Pulka Horde, and become the warlord of several tribes as they flee the Soviet invaders. Untamed Pellucidar is a tale in the grand tradition of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ epic adventures At The Earth’s Core.

#8 Tarzan and the Revolution By Thomas Zachek
Eric Benton, an idealistic young Midwestern Peace Corps volunteer, could hardly have known that his mission to help an African village would embroil him and his colleagues in the political struggles of an emerging African nation. The people of central Africa likewise had no idea how quickly their expectations for freedom could be taken away when a ruthless dictator seizes power. And Tarzan of the Apes had no idea that before long, he would be compelled, once again, to undertake a long and perilous journey with the Waziri to save their families. Set against a backdrop of political unrest in modern Africa, Thomas Zachek’s latest page-turner takes the reader from the dank treasure troves of the lost city of Opar to turmoil in the city streets as Tarzan battles one of his most ruthless foes!

Tarzan and the Revolution

Written by Thomas Zachek / Art by Mike Grell

Midwestern Peace Corps volunteer, could hardly have known that his mission to help an African village would embroil him and his colleagues in the political struggles of an emerging African nation.

AUTHOR

Thomas Zachek grew up on Tarzan movies and, to a lesser extent, the comics. He became hooked on the real Tarzan in high school after picking up a new Ace paperback edition of Tarzan and the Lost Empire for fifty cents–the one with the Frank Frazetta cover with Tarzan hanging from a limb on a cliff overlooking the Roman city. Thomas went on to collect the entire series of Ace and Ballantine paperback reissues of Burroughs’ Tarzan tales (he still has them).

Thomas discovered that Burroughs’ stories were quite unlike the family-friendly Tarzan of the movies, with Johnny Weismuller as the hulking hero living for some reason in the jungle with a classy, aristocratic Jane. No, Burroughs’ hero was actually a British lord who spoke educated English and had a fascinating backstory. Thomas was impressed with the superior level of development and action in these tales.

Nearly forty years passed, wherein most of the writing Thomas did was lesson plans, plus the occasional letter to the editor and a series of columns for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. He attempted writing his first Tarzan tale in 2005 as something of a lark, and then followed it, to date, with six more Tarzan tales. Friends encouraged Thomas to try to get the stories published. Thomas tells us he is grateful to Jim Sullos of ERB, Inc., for giving him the chance. The first three were published in 2016 in a volume entitled Tarzan Trilogy. Thomas notes, “This is my fourth tale. I have tried to craft realistic, page-turning adventure tales featuring classic Tarzan elements while at the same time taking the character in directions that have not been done in Tarzan stories before.”

We invite you to share your thoughts and comments with Thomas atzachekbooks@gmail.com.

An all-new Pellucidar adventure novel by Lee Strong (author of A Soldier of Poloda) with cover and interior art by Douglas Klauba

Northern Russia, 1924: The Red Army is eliminating those who resist the fledgling Soviet government. At The Battle of the Plutonian Plain, the White Russian forces, aided by wily American Edgar Rice Burroughs, do not fall, instead retreating into the dangers of Pellucidar. Comrade Trotsky, the Soviet leader, sends his troops to hunt them down—and destroy them.

Mikhail Kirillivitch Kirov, a young conscript caught up in this mad scheme, is fascinated by this new world. Formerly a student anthropologist, he finds Pellucidar’s Stone Age landscape and inhabitants a revelation—until he’s grabbed by a mammoth Skal and flown back to its aerie to feed its giant offspring.

Thus begins Kirov’s astounding adventure in the Northern environs of Pellucidar, rife with its incredible Paleolithic animal life, including Skals, Trals and Dyals, tremendous birds with sharp talons and fierce beaks; Ryths, the huge Stone Age cave bears whose claws can tear a man apart; and the vicious Jaloks, hyaenodons whose wild packs slaughter their prey mercilessly. These and other fantastic beasts stalk Kirov as he navigates the complex world of Pellucidar’s most dangerous predator: Man.

To survive, Kirov must escape slavery from the Beautiful Ala and her mighty Black Birdriders, foster a civil war, impress the natives with his “inventions,” conquer the terrifying Pulka Horde, and become a warlord of several tribes as they flee the Soviet invaders. It’s a tale in the grand tradition of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ epic adventures at The Earth’s Core.

Tarzan of the Apes Swings into South Africa

Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. (ERB Inc) is pleased to announce that the complete Tarzan of the Apes book series is now available in South Africa. Publisher Henoch Neethling is releasing the 24 books by author Edgar Rice Burroughs in new Afrikaans language editions.

This will be the third, and most comprehensive, South African publication of the immortal jungle lord’s adventures. The first 20 Tarzan novels were released between 1946-51 by African Press Bookshop. From 1983 to 1985, 12 novels were re-released in paperback by Olympos. Now, all 24 novels will be available in a matched set, featuring cover art by renowned fantasy artist Joe Jusko, in hardbound and softbound editions.

“It’s because of these stories that I learned to read,” says publisher Neethling. “A recent study in South Africa revealed that an alarming percentage of Grade 4 pupils read without real comprehension. Simply put, children cannot grasp story content because they do not read enough. We hope this book launch will inspire both children and adults to read and be active again. So many of us read the novels as children, and then ran around outside, swinging from vines and pretending to be Tarzan. Tarzan speaks all African languages and it’s time for Edgar Rice Burroughs to speak Afrikaans again!”

“This is an exciting time for our company,” says Jim Sullos, President of ERB, Inc. “Historically, Tarzan has always been a character that represents courage and honor throughout all cultures. This new publishing venture will introduce Burroughs’ vision to a new segment in our global fan community.”

The books are available here.

by Lee Strong

Worlds at War!
Behind enemy lines—450,000 light-years from Earth

Like fellow Earthman, Tangor from the story Beyond the Farthest Star, American OSS officer Thomas Randolph is mysteriously teleported to a foreign planet where he lands in the center of a 100-year war that mirrors the Allied Powers’ struggle against Adolph Hitler’s Third Reich.

Unlike Tangor, Randolph—now Tomas Ran—finds himself behind enemy lines where he gains a first-hand view of the inner workings of the corrupt Kapar empire. Will Tomas, using his OSS skills, be able to devise a plan to escape with the beautiful Unisan prisoner, Loris Kiri, that will allow them to join her countrymen in their struggle against the Kapars?

American novelist Edgar Rice Burroughs debuted the world of Poloda in the pulp story Beyond the Farthest Star in 1940 just as Hitler’s Nazis marched across Europe and the Imperial Japanese extended their reach across the South Pacific. Burroughs’ youthful idealism regarding the nobility of America’s previous war efforts had given way to a mature perspective of the savagery of combat that stains every battlefield. Burroughs’ deeply-held views are reflected in this tale about a planet ravaged by 100 years of conflict as the nation of Unis devotes its entire existence to the struggle of freedom against tyranny.

Author Lee Strong created this second adventure on the planet Poloda, which lies beyond the Globular Cluster NGC 7006—450,000 light years away from earth. Join Tomas Ran as he explores Poloda, battles Kapars, and finds love Beyond the Farthest Star.

Enjoy this exciting new adventure [Book #5 in The Wild Adventures of Edgar Rice Burroughs Series and the first Science Fiction book in the Series]. Also available in Hard Cover with a Dust Jacket and Soft Cover at ERBurroughs.com.

From Ancient Opar to the Moon: An Interview with Author Christopher Paul Carey

Christopher Paul Carey is a name well known to the readers of Philip José Farmer. In 2012, his collaboration with Farmer, The Song of Kwasin, was published by Subterranean Press in the omnibus Gods of Opar: Tales of Lost Khokarsa. Other installments in the Khokarsa series (also known as the Ancient Opar series) by Carey followed, including Exiles of Kho, Hadon, King of Opar, and Blood of Ancient Opar. As Farmer’s Khokarsa series was inspired by the lost city of Opar from Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan novels, it is fitting that Christopher Paul Carey now tries his hand at Swords Against the Moon Men, a new novel set in the world of Burroughs’ Moon trilogy (The Moon Maid, The Moon Men, and The Red Hawk). I took some time to ask Chris about Swords Against the Moon Men as well as other aspects of his writing career.
