The Man-Eater: an all new web comic in our comic subscription lineup

Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. Presents

The Man-Eater
an all new web comic in our comic subscription lineup

In May-June 1915, Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote a film scenario titled “Ben, King of the Beasts.” When he could not secure a movie deal, the story was serialized in The New York Evening Worldnewspapers that November as “The Man-Eater.” The 37,000-word adventure novella was combined with Burroughs’ succeeding post-apocalyptic novella and released in hardback by Science-Fiction & Fantasy Publications in 1957 as Beyond Thirty and The Man-Eater.

THE PLOT
In the Belgian Congo, big game hunters Jefferson Scott, Jr. and Robert Gordon befriend the Methodist missionary Reverend Sangamon Morton and his wife Mary and daughter, Ruth, whom Scott soon marries. Gordon is entrusted with returning stock certificates—the inheritance of the Scotts’ young daughter Virginia—to America for safekeeping with Scott’s father.

When Scott and the elder Mortons are killed by hostile natives, Belgian forces rescue Ruth and Virginia, who relocate to America to live with Jefferson Scott, Sr. There, they find that their inheritance has disappeared. When Scott, Sr. dies and his nephew Scott Taylor arrives to claim the estate, the race is on to establish Virginia’s birthright—a quest that will lead Virginia and Gordon’s son, Dick, to darkest Africa in pursuit of the truth, pursued by Taylor. There, the rival factions encounter a huge lion whose fate becomes entwined with theirs—in a chase that returns them all to the family estate in Virginia.

New Comic Strip Launch: Pirate Blood

Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. Presents

Pirate Blood
an all new web comic in our comic subscription lineup

“Pirate Blood” was among the manuscripts discovered in Edgar Rice Burroughs’ safe following his death in 1950. It was Burroughs’ second foray (after The Mucker) into a narrative featuring an anti-hero as the protagonist, a dark tale of piracy, murder, and genetic pre-destination. Penned in 1932, the tale was too gritty for Burroughs’ usual audience, and remained unsold until 1970.

Our story:
Johnny LaFitte always comes in second to his best friend Frank Adams, in academics as well as athletics. Johnny blames heredity—Frank and his friends are scions of California’s old money, while Johnny’s most notable ancestor was the famous pirate Jean LaFitte. Johnny’s belief in genetic destiny grows when he graduates from college to become a motorcycle cop, while his friends live the entitled, country club lifestyle provided by their family fortunes. It’s a particularly bitter pill when Johnny discovers that Daisy Juke, his childhood sweetheart, is now engaged to Frank.

A chase to catch a bank robber finds Johnny shanghaied to the South Pacific aboard a dirigible. There, Johnny is forced to join a band of pirates to survive—and discovers his unique aptitude for the profession. Johnny’s attraction to La Diablesa, the mistress of his boss, the Vulture, complicates things—as does the appearance of his lost love, Daisy.

New Comic Strip launch: The Moon Men

Edgar Rice Burroughs Presents

The Moon Men – A Trilogy of Future History
an all new web comic in our comic subscription lineup

Written at the close of World War I, Burroughs’ alternate history tells of a great 50-year war that finally concludes in 1967 with an Afllied victory culminating in world peace and total freedom. As the new dawn begins, Earth is learning how to put war behind her while simultaneously launching a technologically advanced space craft with a five man crew on its maiden voyage to Mars.

The voyage’s primary mission is to forge diplomatic relations between the civilizations of Mars (known as Barsoom by its inhabitants) and Earth. The ship’s most senior officer, Captain Julian, is forced to deal with space sickness and panic from his old flight school rival, Lt Commander Orthis, who is damaging the ship in his fear — leading to Orthis being put in irons. Orthis, consumed with rage, sabotages the ship’s engines resulting in a forced landing on the Moon.

During the descent, the spaceship is caught in a lunar spiral that pulls the ship deep into the center of the Moon revealing an earth-like environment with plants, animals and inhabitants. Julian gives Orthis a chance of redemption — not only for Orthis’ sake but for the survival of his crew, as every man is needed.

Julian and the crew explore and discover a variety of creatures and civilizations. While navigating the majestic forest-like inner moon, they meet the beautiful princess Nah-ee-lah, who captures the eye of both Julian and Orthis. Will Julian’s moral instincts prevail when faced with Orthis’ selfish desires?

The Earthmen soon encounter the warlike civilization of the Kalkars — human-like creatures whose thirst for power will capture the diabolical passions of Orthis. Together, Orthis and the Kalkars turn their desires toward Earth, launching an invasion and 400-year occupation, pitting future generations of Julian’s and Orthis’ descendants in the ultimate struggle of human freedom versus totalitarian rule — an underlying theme in many of Burroughs’ adventures.

New Comic Strip launch: The Tarzan Twins

Edgar Rice Burroughs Presents

The Tarzan Twins
an all new web comic in our subscription lineup

Tarzan’s extended family is surprised by his invitation to come visit his great African estate. But, only the two Tarzan Twins are able to come. Who are these twins?

The Tarzan Twins were born on the same day, and although they are not as “alike as two peas in a pod,” they still resemble one another closely enough to fulfil the requirements of “twinship.” Dick has a shock of black hair, while Doc’s hair is the sunny hue of molasses candy. And, their noses, blue eyes, and facial features are alike.

But in one respect they shatter every rule that has been laid down for twins from the very beginning of time. Dick (whose father was a distant relative of Lord Greystoke) was born in England and Doc in America – and without a doubt, they are not twins at all. Dick and Doc’s mothers are sisters – twin sisters – and so their offspring resemble each other. As teenagers the boys went to the same school and became the closest of cousins, and when their Tarzan relationship was disclosed, they were thereafter known as The Tarzan Twins.

As excitement grew with their impending trip to Africa, their scholastic standing suffered greatly as they turned to athletic workouts in preparation for the trip. But what they could not anticipate was that a train wreck in Africa would interfere with Tarzan meeting them at the train station or that they would become lost in the great jungle that is Africa. They also could not anticipate that they would be captured by an African tribe, nor that their adolescent lives could be extinguished then and there. And when captured, what then? Quick extinguishment or escape and rescue by Tarzan?

See our exciting new web comic strip for the whole story. Written by our prolific writer, Martin Powell, and drawn by the renowned artist, Carlos Arguela – you are in for an exciting read.

The Mad King – all new web comic in our subscription lineup

Life as a gentleman farmer in the once-wild West was hardly exciting enough for an adventurer and master swordsman like Barney Custer. So when he had the chance to make the long voyage to the land of Lutha, his mother’s native land, he took it – and encountered more adventure in a few months than most people find in a lifetime. mad-king

The Mad King is set in the fictional European kingdom of Lutha, where young Custer (the son of an American farmer and a runaway Luthan princess, Victoria Rubinroth) is unaware of his royal blood, much less that he is a dead ringer for his relative Leopold, the current king of Lutha. Barney arrives just as King Leopold escapeds his ten years’ imprisonment at the hands of his scheming uncle, Prince Peter of Blentz. Much to Barney’s, and everyone else’s confusion, he is naturally mistaken for the king, leading to numerous complications.

mad-king-2

The fictional country of Lutha’s location is, as Burroughs describes it, between Austria and Serbia. Lutha’s circumstances mirror those of many Balkan nations forced to choose sides in the opening phase of the First World War.

mad-king-3

The Mad King: a crumbling kingdom, a black-hearted regent and his diabolical cohorts, a beautiful princess trapped in a dark and dismal dungeon, sinister plots and harrowing escapes – this is what Barney Custer found and this is what awaits the reader when he begins this tale of romantic adventure from the pen of master storyteller Edgar Rice Burroughs – compete with swordplay and intrigue, a beautiful princess in need of rescue, a courageous American hero, a throne in danger, evil conspirators, derring-do and narrow escapes.

Stan Lee: “I wanted to be like Tarzan.”

stan_lee_by_gage_skidmore_3Great piece on the iconic artist.

In his working-class upbringing in New York City, reading offered him both escape and something to reach for. Charles Dickens was a particular favorite, as were tales of adventure and derring-do.

“I wanted to be like the Scarlet Pimpernel,” he says. “I wanted to be like Tarzan.” He remembers the personal connection he felt when he read the Jerry Todd and Poppy Ott books, precursors to the Hardy Boys series, featuring young detectives and a message from the author on each closing page.

New Comic Subscription Launch: I Am a Barbarian

barbarian1 barbarian2

Edgar Rice Burroughs Presents
I Am a Barbarian
an all new web comic in our subscription lineup

Someday, I will have my revenge. Someday, I will kill Caesar.
This historical tale is a rather free translation of the memoirs of Britannicus – Caligula’s slave for 25 years. Caligula, emperor of Rome from AD 37 to 41, was historically known for being insane. This story contains numerous facets of Caligula’s life, including his popular early acts as emperor and then his descent into madness.

barbarian3

I Am A Barbarian is a historical novel written by Edgar Rice Burroughs in 1941. The only other historical novel penned by Mr. Burroughs – The Master of Adventure – was The Outlaw of Torn which was set in King Henry III’s England and was the second novel he wrote in his fledgling career. Mr. Burroughs wrote his classic, Tarzan of The Apes, just after The Outlaw of Torn.

Britannicus, the arrogant son of a defiant chief in far-off Britain, was just another young barbarian to the haughty Romans who enslaved him. Britannicus’ mother and father were also enslaved by the Romans and he was never able to speak to them again. Britannicus becomes the personal slave of Emperor Caligula’s nephew. In the decadence of Imperial Rome, Britannicus faced death time and again, in the gladiatorial arena, in chariot races, in the twisted hearts of Palaces, and always at the hand of his master, mad Caligula – the bloodiest Roman of them all.

barbarian4

Britannicus watches as Caligula falsely accuses, fines, and even kills, individuals in order to seize their estates during a financial crisis caused by his own wasteful spending. In order to gain funds, Caligula asks the public to lend the state money; he levies taxes on lawsuits, marriage and prostitution; and begins auctioning the lives of the gladiators at his shows. Once, when Caligula was bored, he ordered his guards to throw scores of people into the arena to be eaten by lions because there were no more criminals to be thrown in the ring.

Only the imagination of Edgar Rice Burroughs could have reincarnated the chariot races, the intrigues, the people, and the sights and sounds of long-dead Imperial Rome. And now the brilliant team of writer Tom Simmons, artist Mike Dubisch, and letterer Jamal Walton brings this larger than life tale – with its vivid story, art and period authenticity – to life in this new Comic Strip.

Don’t miss it! Subscribe to our new web comic strip, and be thoroughly entertained by the twisting adventure that only Edgar Rice Burroughs can create.

Best Regards,
The Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. Team

WRITER Tom Simmons

“In mid-1941 – with personal health issues mounting and the world once again at war – Edgar Rice Burroughs penned I Am a Barbarian, his second and final historical novel.  The story is dark and decidedly un-Burroughs like, which make adapting it to action/adventure strip format a challenge I’m very excited about,” says screenwriter and graphic novelist Tom Simmons of his latest writing gig. In addition to adaptations for the online strips The Monster Men and The Outlaw of Torn, Tom has several screenplays and graphic novels in progress. “It’s a pleasure to be working with Lovecraft-Award winning artist Mike Dubisch on this effort, as well as with Jamal Walton on yet another ERB, Inc. project.

ARTIST Mike Dubisch

Internationally known fantasy illustrator and graphic novelist Mike Dubisch has his roots in golden age horror comics and pulp Science Fiction. His art has been used in toy design and illustration for Star Wars, The Wheel of Time, and Dungeons and Dragons role playing games, covers for Aliens VS Predator, and graphic adaptations of The Boxcar Children and other children’s literature. His work has appeared inScience Fiction Age, Realms of Fantasy, Weird Tales and the H. P. Lovecraft Magazine of Horror.

“I was huge reader of Burroughs at a young age,  drawn to Tarzan’s jungle adventures amongst the apes, a counterpoint to my obsession with King Kong and giant monsters. Later, John Carter’s fantastic adventures enthralled me at the same time as I discovered the great illustrators and comic artists who ended up shaping my artistic vision.”

Mike is an instructor at the Academy of Art University in San Fransisco. He also creates fine art, prints, and experimental films exploring H. P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos. Mike lives in Phoenix, Arizona with his wife, Carolyn, and three daughters. www.DUBISCH.com

LETTERER Jamal Walton

L Jamal Walton is a web and graphic designer, illustrator, colorist, and letterer currently based in Durham, NC. He has worked on projects big and small: Fist of Justice; Once Upon A Time Machine, Masters of the Universe; and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, to name a few.

More recently, Jamal has focused more of his time working on his own comic creations: Warmageddon; Ungoodwise; and Captain Evil & Diabla.  He is always looking for opportunities to display his art at art exhibits and conventions, and to share his experience and skills in the craft of making comics via camps and workshops.
