Another heartwarming story from the animal kingdom, once again showing the intelligence and closeness of Elephants:
In a touching display of caring and togetherness, a herd of elephants recently coaxed a baby elephant that had fallen in a busy roadway back to its feet and safely into the wilderness.
The dramatic scene played out recently in Kruger National Park in South Africa, with motorists watching from both directions in the road.

Yahoo news posted a beautiful gallery of photos capture by Gordon Donovan visiting Namibia’s Etosha National Park the previous year. Donovan witnessed a skirmish between three lions and a group of elephants over a watering hole, the two species desperately fighting for the previous liquid in a 116 degree heat. Who won? At the watering hole in South Africa’s Addo Elephant National Park, a baby elephant learned a valuable lesson when he attempted to intimidate a much bigger buffalo. The elephant lifted its head with ears out to send a strong message, but the buffalo did not give in. Instead, he headbutted the smaller creature, sending him flying into the air. Surprisingly, the other elephants did not seem to be too frazzled by the event, but the little calf thankfully was not hurt.

Huffington Post just put up a great and heartbreaking article about the true effects of elephant poaching:
Elephants are extraordinary animals. They’re super smart and emotional, and their relationships are complex. They’ve been known to show compassion, empathy, altruism, self-awareness and grief. People the world over love elephants; some even worship them.
But these majestic creatures are also one of the planet’s most threatened. African elephants, for instance, are being driven to extinction by poaching, killed en masse for their magnificent tusks. “I could take you tomorrow to a park and show you fresh carcasses. It’s a tidal wave of destruction flooding across the continent,” long-time ranger and conservationist Rory Young told The Huffington Post last month. “Ivory is beautiful. The problem is, we just can’t do this anymore.”

The abundance of the Marula fruit around Singita Sabi Sand, South Africa, this winter proved to be a great excuse for some elephants to party. Like apples on the ground, Marula fruit ferment after they fall off a tree. An African legend describes the results, and these photos provide the evidence, showing the massive pachyderms as they get hammered. In fact, eyewitnesses described the elephants stumbling, falling over and otherwise displaying signs of boozing familiar to humans.
